I’m successful, what next?

What are my obligations?

The Department of Social Services requires all successful applicants to complete a mandatory survey in May and November. The survey will assess your ongoing eligibility.

You will be considered ineligible if you:

  • are no longer studying
  • are no longer a permanent  resident living in Australia
  • receive another bursary or scholarship
  • do not complete surveys
  • your caring role has ended
  • have deferred your studies or taken a leave of absence.

Young carers found to be ineligible in May will not receive the last payment. You WILL NOT have to pay back the first payment.

When and how do I receive payments?

You will receive $2,500 at the start of the year. You will then receive a second payment of $1,000 in June after completing the Mid-Year Survey (MYS) and a final payment of $268 after completing the End of Year Survey (EOYS) in November.

What can I use the money for?

The funding should be used towards supporting you in your education or training. This could include, but not limited to:

  • school fees,
  • laptops and software,
  • uniforms,
  • transport and accommodation,
  • respite care,
  • emotional support, and
  • extracurricular activities.
