What happens after I apply?

Once you’ve submitted your application, you will receive a confirmation email within 24 hours. If you don’t, please check the status of your application in the online portal.  Applications will then be reviewed and assessed. It can take up to 16 weeks for applications to be approved, and involves 4 key stages.

Stage 1

Applications are collated.

Stage 2

Applications are passed onto the Independent Assessment Panel for review.

The panel is made up of experts who have experience working with young carers and are not employed by Carers Australia. The panel’s decision is final.

A list of successful candidates will be provided by the panel to the Young Carer Team to Conditionally Approve applications and begin the verification process.

Stage 3

The Young Carers Team will contact Conditionally Approved applicants to request supporting documentation and verification of eligibility.

When the requested documents are returned and accepted, the application will progress to Approved.

When will I be notified if I am Conditionally Approved?

On average, results are available 16 weeks after applications close.

What will I need to provide if I am Conditionally Approved?

Conditionally Approved applicants need to provide supporting documentation to verify their application. This includes proof of:

  • age/identity
  • enrolment,
  • caring,
  • bank details,
  • parent/guardian consent, and
  • Australian Citizenship or Permanent Resident living in Australia.
  • You will need to submit an application online during the application open period.
  • A new application must be submitted each year you wish to be considered. Only one application per young carer is accepted.
  • Login or create an account to submit an application. Applications can only be submitted during the application period. Early and late applications are not accepted.
