What do young carers do?

Caring roles will differ from person to person depending on the abilities of the person they are caring for. Their role could be short term, and others might care for many years.

Some young carers may help their family by watching their siblings for a couple of hours a week keeping them company. Others might provide ‘around the clock’ care. Care provided could include the following:

  • Administering medication
  • Changing dressings
  • Repositioning
  • Assist with feeding
  • Showering and bathing
  • Toileting
  • Dressing
  • Personal Hygiene
  • Attending medical appointments
  • Cooking and cleaning
  • Looking after siblings
  • Transporting
  • Assisting with mobility
  • Running errands
  • Providing emotional support via phone or visits
  • Communicating or translating on behalf of a person
  • Budgeting and paying the bills

The list provided above is only an example of some tasks young carers assist with or do.
