When this privacy notice applies

This privacy notice applies to the Young Carer Bursary (YCB) Program, including the application form, mid-year survey of YCB recipients, and our ongoing administration of the YCB Program.

It explains how we (Carers Australia Limited) manage your personal information to meet our obligations under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (Privacy Act) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) in Schedule 1 of the Privacy Act.

Personal information we collect

When you complete and submit your YCB Program application form, we may collect a range of personal information including:

  • your first name
  • your last name
  • your address
  • your email address
  • your phone number
  • the main language you speak at home
  • your bank account details
  • the first name, last name, relationship to you, phone number, and email address of your parent, guardian or other secondary contact, if any
  • details of your caring situation including your opinions about your caring role, proof of your caring role, how long you have been a young carer, how many hours each week on average you provide care, how many people you care for, and how often your caring role affects your ability to study at home and your ability to attend classes
  • details of your education including the highest level of education you will have achieved by the end of the year, the highest level of education you hold to date, and proof of your intent to study next year such as a statement of enrolment, a letter from an education institution confirming you are enrolled for next year, or a paid invoice for course fees for next year
  • details of your employment, if any
  • details about your household including your household structure and current income of your household per year before tax
  • identity documents including your driver’s licence, passport, birth certificate, proof of age card, student ID, Health Care card, Medicare card, Citizenship certificate, Residency certificate, Pensioner concession Card, Permanent residency, or visa
  • your country of birth
  • the type of caring duties you perform
  • the name of any person who helped you complete the application form.

In the YCB Program application form, you may also be asked to tell us if you:

  • are caring for a family member or a friend
  • are a resident or permanent citizen of Australia and living in Australia for the period of the bursary
  • intend to study an approved course, such as high school, home school, or your first undergraduate degree, at a recognised Australian institution either full or part-time next year
  • will be receiving a scholarship or bursary from another program or institution next year that is worth more than $500
  • are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
  • live with a disability or impairment
  • are the main carer of the person you are caring for
  • are in contact with a young carer worker or support worker.

If we do not collect all the above listed personal information from you, we may not be able to assess your application for the YCB Program.

Some questions in the YCB Program application form are mandatory and others are optional. Mandatory questions must be answered before you can submit your application form and are indicated with a red asterisk. You can choose whether to answer any optional questions.

If your application is successful, we may ask you to confirm or update your personal information from time to time as part of our ongoing administration of the YCB Program.

Why we collect this personal information

We collect this personal information to manage, administer, and deliver the YCB Program on behalf of the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing including:

  • assessing applications for the YCB Program
  • advising applicants (both successful and unsuccessful) of the outcome of their YCB program application
  • dispersing bursary payments to bursary recipients under the YCB Program
  • distributing surveys about the YCB Program to bursary recipients
  • policy development, research, consultation, and evaluation of the YCB Program.

How we collect this personal information

We collect personal information provided by you when you complete and submit your YCB Program application form.

If you provide the personal information of other people, you must obtain their consent to our collection of their personal information in your YCB Program application form and draw their attention to this privacy notice.

Who we disclose your personal information to

We may disclose your personal information to:

  • the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing
  • anyone the law requires or authorises us to disclose it to.

If you give us your consent, we may disclose your personal information to your local Carer Gateway service provider or to peak bodies for carers in your State or Territory.

All personal information we collect is stored securely in Australia.
