I am a carer to my older brother

I am a carer to my older brother who has Down syndrome.

Throughout my life I’ve always cherished having him as an older brother. Growing up we were like any other couple of brothers we would play together etcetera. Best of all my brother was keen to do everything that I was doing.

So much so when I was playing junior level AFL footy, he was playing right beside me in the same team.

However, growing up and even somewhat now I have to give up opportunities to do other things to take care of my brother.

For example, at school I was once doing a maths exam in year 11. Owen had some difficulties and the teachers pulled me away from the exam so I could help look after him.

I didn’t get any makeup time or anything, so this feels a bit unfair.

But at the same time, I have been able to experience so much more with my brother, which considerably outweighs it. I have also been a volunteer basketball assistant coach for about 9  years, and although university makes it harder to attend I love every moment of it.

My brother is now doing many things independently and loving it. He has a girlfriend and is living his life the way he wants to. I’m really proud of him.
