How can I help?
Young carers provide emotional and physical support to their loved ones that you would often expect an adult to do. It can be a very stressful, mentally draining, and an isolated position to be in.
As a friend or family member
- Ask if they identify as young carer. If they don’t, let them know what a ‘young carer’ is and what the role looks like. Let them know there are supports available to help
- Help ensure they are getting a break from their caring role
- Let them know they are not alone
- Be there to listen without judgement
- Offer to help with tasks
- With the young carers permission, let the school know they might next extra support
As a teacher or educational professional
- Ask if they identify as young carer. If they don’t, let them know what a ‘young carer’ is and what the role looks like. Let them know there are supports available to help
- Encourage engagement with organisations that can support the young carer and their family
- Assist with access to supports and resources, both internally and externally
- Support their learning by providing the flexibility or other accommodations the young carer needs to succeed at school
- Create a safe place to talk or just to have time out
- Raise young carer awareness in your education setting by running events within the school or in conjunction with other organisations
- If they are comfortable talking about it, learn about their caring role
- Help put together an emergency plan in case of hospitalisation or a natural disaster
