How can I help?

Young carers provide emotional and physical support to their loved ones that you would often expect an adult to do.  It can be a very stressful, mentally draining, and an isolated position to be in.

As a friend or family member

  • Ask if they identify as young carer. If they don’t, let them know what a ‘young carer’ is and what the role looks like.  Let them know there are supports available to help
  • Help ensure they are getting a break from their caring role
  • Let them know they are not alone
  • Be there to listen without judgement
  • Offer to help with tasks
  • With the young carers permission, let the school know they might next extra support

As a teacher or educational professional

  • Ask if they identify as young carer. If they don’t, let them know what a ‘young carer’ is and what the role looks like. Let them know there are supports available to help
  • Encourage engagement with organisations that can support the young carer and their family
  • Assist with access to supports and resources, both internally and externally
  • Support their learning by providing the flexibility or other accommodations the young carer needs to succeed at school
  • Create a safe place to talk or just to have time out
  • Raise young carer awareness in your education setting by running events within the school or in conjunction with other organisations
  • If they are comfortable talking about it, learn about their caring role
  • Help put together an emergency plan in case of hospitalisation or a natural disaster
